Impact of Biochar Addition in Microwave Torrefaction of Camelina Straw and Switchgrass for Biofuel Production

The possibility of applying biochar in mild torrefaction treatment to improve the thermochemical characteristics ground biomass was focus study. Camelina straw and switchgrass were torrefied a reactor using microwave irradiation at temperatures 250 °C 300 with residence times 10, 15 20 min, under nitrogen-activated inert conditions. Both addition more than 10% time significantly affected product yields, as MW shifted from °C. Overall, results indicated slight increase ash content, mass loss percentage intensification, heating values, fixed carbon, while moisture content volatile matter decreased camelina switchgrass, or without biochar. Biochar long (20 min) reduced energy requirement during process. combustion index values showed that suits co-combustion coal coal-fired plant is potential biomaterial for biofuel pellets.
